What is Biomedical Engineering?
- Biomedical Engineering (BME) is an interdisciplinary subject in which the principles and tools of traditional engineering disciplines to the analysis and solution of problems in biology and medicine. This is evident throughout healthcare, from diagnosis and analysis to treatment and recovery, and has entered the public conscience though the proliferation of implantable medical devices; a number of life-enhancing and life-saving technologies and devices have been developed by Biomedical engineers, such as dentures and artificial limb replacements, robotic and laser surgery, systems to monitor vital signs, pacemakers, artificial organs, ultrasound, X-rays and lab-on-a-chip diagnostic device and etc.
Biomedical Engineering differs from other branches of engineering that has an influence on human health in that biomedical engineers use and apply an intimate knowledge of modern biological principles in their engineering design process. Therefore, there is no particular subject matter or set of techniques that belong exclusively it. Aspects of Mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, chemical engineering, materials science, mathematics, and computer engineering are all integrated with human biology in biomedical engineering to improve the human health.
Recently, Korea’s healthcare industry is growing rapidly and present excellent opportunities in the area of advanced medical devices. That thanks to the Korean government designated the medical devices industry as one of its major growth engines. In Daegu city, several medical device R&D infrastructures and Special Zone based on the cooperation between the industry and academia were established, such as Daegu Technopark, Daegu Gyeongbuk Institute for Korea Traditional Medical Industry, Integrated Medical Promotion Agency.
With the designation of Daegu R&D centers by the government and high quality education, Keimyung University Department of Biomedical Engineering has sent countless graduates into the various companies and institutes. Through our efforts, the Department of Biomedical Engineering in Keimyung Unviersity will emerge as a best higher education institution in the region for future growth engines and a key pillar of the high-tech science belt which links the world.
Educational Targets of the Department of Biomedical Engineering
- The Department of Biomedical Engineering offers undergraduate and graduate program in Biomedical Engineering. Combine the problem solving ability of engineers with the knowledge of the biological and medical fields to develop new solutions for improving human health, healthcare and quality of life.
The undergraduate program provides the scope of knowledge and training for employment in the field based on the Keimyung University Dong-San Medical Center, Biomedical Engineering Institution and other medical industry companies. Also, forms the basis for further study at the graduate level. The curriculum emphasizes linking the traditional engineering with biology and medicine, and allows for students to obtain depth in areas of their choice through technical electives.
The graduate program is designed to engage the students in research that interests themselves. Students with graduate program will become more competitive for laboratory position in academia or industry. The skills and knowledge also will be strength base for School of Medicine and continue in a doctoral program in Biomedical Engineering or other engineering and biomedical fields.
